When the Department of Mass Communication, of the then Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta was to take off in 1979, it had the likes of Drs Sina Julius Aina, Sulaiman Osho , Dr. Kola Adesina, Mr Bidemi Osunbiyi, Mr Ayinde Soaga, etc as its guinea pigs: these people would later become scholars and bigwigs in the Communications industry. While people like Mr Soaga chose the newsroom, — he made his marks in NTA and was a former General Manager of OGTV too— the likes of Dr Osho (he was with the Punch Newspaper), Dr Kola Adesina ( A Former Managing Editor, African Concern Magazine, London, UK; Former News Editor, West African Magazine, London) HOD Mass Communication, Crescent University and Dr Sina Julius Aina, a Chief Lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, MAPOLY chose the classroom. Theirs was a class of stellar stars.
Of paramount interest here is Dr Sina Julius Aina . He is an excellent hybrid of the newsroom and the classroom as evidenced by his compelling credentials (former Ogun State Editor of Champion Newspapers).
I recently remarked that during my studentship in the Department of Mass Communication, MAPOLY, we had a galaxy of dazzling stars as lecturers. Among these shining stars, for me, the one who brightly and admirably caught my fancy the most— academically— is Dr. Sina Aina who is as physically tall as he’s intellectually tall. A mental giant. “Hino Fantasy” as adorably called by his old folks.
Dr Sina is a seasoned scholar of communications whose carriage and candor exudes discipline, diligence and forthrightness, a legacy in which he mentored, monitored, and maintained younger, up-and-coming scholars. A relentless reader who doesn’t leave things to “CHANCE”.
Well known for his intellectual depth, academic dynamism, tremendous courage, and abundant physical energy, Dr Aina would always appreciate creativity, reward diligence, and encourage excellence. A number of his (ex) students like Messers Lawal Abiodun Jamiu Pese, Jonathan Olasupo Olajide, Waheed Ogunjobi, Idris Katib, Bankole Taiwo David Adedigba, OlaDotun Oladipupo Dotman and so on would attest to this. A man of transparent honesty and unblemished integrity whose influence is being felt within and outside the walls of MAPOLY.
The saying goes that a man of success achieves his goals but a man of significance changes his world. If there are people who understand the difference between the two,Dr Sina Aina is at the forefront of them.
With Dr. Aina, there is never a boring moment, as he would take you on a nostalgic journey of history into the avant-garde tradition of ingenious scholarship, creativity and discipline that marked the early decades of MAPOLY where the team of the late Dr Femi Sonaike, Prof Idowu Sobowale, Prof Lai Oso, Dr Uja and co trained them with the traits of characters that befits a thespian, a linguist and a communicator all rolled into one.
On this momentous day of yours, I joined your family and friends in celebrating you. Happy birthday, Doc. Thank you for truly teaching us when you were supposed to.
