The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, the Right Honourable Olakunle Oluomo has pledged the resolve of the ninth legislature in the state to ensure speedy domestication of Consumer Protection Law as soon as the law comes into full force at the Federal level.
Speaker Oluomo who spoke on Monday at the 2020 World Consumer Rights Day with the Theme " Sustainable Consumer : The Role of Stakeholders put together by the Consumer Advocacy Protection Initiative observed that the rights of the consumer will continue to be trampled upon if there are no Consumer Protection Laws.
Said he " When we get the Law from the National level, we will domesticate it. I believe our Governor will support it"
The Speaker who observed that in advanced clime, there are virtually no issues of public concern without a corresponding Advocacy Group called on the citizenry to work more towards creating more advocacy groups in order to make the country a better place.
" We need Advocacy Group for all aspects of Life. It will afford us the opportunity to have a better clime. If we continue to rely on government ,we will fail because Government goes, Government comes and the people remain. When new Government comes and meet a good foundation, would they dare cancel it?
He challenged others present to always contribute their quota to the development of the society.
Speaking on behalf of Consumer Protection Advocacy Initiative, Mr. Ola Animasaun recalled how the group was former through an idea conceived by Mr. David Olatunji Ajayi and supported by him and others saying something that involves everybody should readily be everyone's concern ,admonishing people to support the initiative .
Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion and the iIyalode of Yorubaland, Chief Mrs Alaba Lawson appreciated the convener for the well thought out initiative, saying through such Initiative, everybody will know their responsibilities on what to do as consumers .
The Director, National Orientation Agency in the State, Mr. Sola Babalola while lending his voice said the initiative is long overdue .
He said " There must be a change of orientation and a redirection of purposes. We will collaborate and work effectively with you to actualise your dream .
The. Honourable Commissioner for Public Affairs who was represented by Director Public Affairs in the state, Mrs. Adedoyin Awoyemi while noting that the work of the agency revolves around investigating Consumer Complaints pledged the readiness of the commission to work with the Consumer Advocacy Protection Initiative to seek redress for Consumers.
The Guest Speaker,Dr. Olatunde Oluwatola while delivering the lecture on the theme " Sustainable Consumption : The Role of Stakeholders observed that when sustainable consumption is practised, resources are used wisely and efficiently minimizing waste products and pollution.
"This as he said is often achieved by doing more and better with less. In other words, find ways to meet needs and desires without depleting planet's finite natural resources".
Such measures as he said include collocation of ancillary services in production or service generation, carpooling, using renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, developing alternative fuel sources, such as biofuels, for transportation needs and using environmentally friendly cleaning products.
He added that practising sustainable consumption can ensure that the environment has resources available long into the future.
Accordingly he said sustainable consumption is an umbrella term that brings together a number of key issues, such as meeting needs, enhancing the quality of life, improving resource efficiency, increasing the use of renewable energy sources, minimising waste, taking a life cycle perspective and taking into account the equity dimension which is bridging the gap between the rich and the poor.
Stakeholders including the National Orientation Agency ( NOA), being Union of Journalist , Chambers of Commerce and Industries Mines and Agriculture, members of the Civil Society Groups among others were present at the event held at the Conference Hall of the Abeokuta Chambers of Commerce .
