The Ogun State Government says that it has put all machineries in place to implement the 2020 bi-annual Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week ( MNCHW) with the determination of reaching over 1.023 children and 1 million pregnant women across the 20 local government areas of the state.
This move, which is the brainchild of the National Council on Health at her 53rd Meeting, will be the 18th round since inception in 2010 and it will help reduce the unacceptably high number of illnesses, deaths among women of child bearing age and children as well as Newborn in the state.
The Commissioner Designate in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, who made this known while speaking at a press briefing in Abeokuta, said the week long routine activity is aimed at delivering an integrated package of high-impact preventive and curative health services which are cost effective and result oriented at health facilities in over 200 locations in the state.
Dr. Coker said that the programme would be formally flagged- off by the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun on Monday, January 6 while the implementation will commence afterwards from January 13 to 17.
According to the Commissioner Designate, the interventions during the week will include distribution of Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets, screening of children between 6 to 59 months for malnutrition, birth registration and HIV counselling and testing (HCT).
Others are administering of Vitamin A supplementation for children between 6-59months and iron-folate supplementation for pregnant women, deworming of children from age 12 to 59 months as well as health promotion on key household practices for improved lifestyle.
